RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 El ingreso en la UE de los “países del este” quince años después de iniciado el proceso A1 Sacristán Represa, Marcos A2 Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid AB This report provides an overview of the EU enlargement process to incorporate Central and Eastern European countries and its consequences. This process began fifteen years ago, but thirty years have passed since the events that made this possible, namely the fall of the USSR. Throughout this period, numerous and deep changes have taken place in the broader environment, as a consequence of the advances of the so-called globalization and also within the inner scope of the EU. Some of these changes have been influenced by the enlargement process, as well as the original events that led to it. Others have had a direct impact on the consequences of the aforementioned process. The old dilemma of deeper versus wider European integration offers an interesting point of view to examine old and new problems affecting the two lines of development mentioned by this dilemma. I believe that both are still worthy of consideration despite the fact that some authors think that this dilemma no longer applies today. Budgetary restrictions and a misguided or even arrogant EU enlargement strategy, have been persistent problems. These problems, however, should not be considered unsolvable in the current context, and the EU can and should address them. This will require deep changes in its structure, organisation and policy prioritisation.
