La caída del muro de Berlín en Praga

Abstract

Este texto es, en gran parte, una reminiscencia personal de los últimos años del régimen comunista en lo que se conocía bajo el nombre de Checoslovaquia. Mi objetivo es mostrar algunas de las brechas que condujeron al derrumbe del Muro de Berlín. Estas brechas se notaban en casi todos los aspectos de la vida cotidiana. Sin embargo, el texto también trata de señalar que el legado del régimen comunista no desapareció con la Revolución de Terciopelo del noviembre 1989. Por ejemplo el lenguaje, sometido por cuatro décadas a una propaganda brutal, sigue llevando sus cicatrices hasta hoy. Esta lengua lisiada es la que utilizamos hoy para pensar el mundo y nuestro lugar en éste, y condiciona también nuestra percepción de la Unión Europea. La entrada de la República checa en la UE se comprende aquí como el punto culminante de la evolución histórica empezada en 1989.

This text is mostly a personal recollection of the last years of communist rule in what was known as Czechoslovakia. My aim is to show some of the fissures that led to the crumbling of the Berlin Wall. These fissures were noticeable in almost every aspect of everyday life. Nonetheless, the text also tries to hint that the legacy of the communist rule was not wiped off by the Velvet Revolution of November 1989. For instance, the language, submitted for four decades to a brutal propaganda, bears until now its scars. This mutilated language is the one we use to think about the world and our place in it, and is one of the conditions of our perception of the European Union. Czech membership in the EU is perceived here as the flash point of the historic evolution started by the 1989 events.
