La fototextualidad autobiográfica en la narrativa española del siglo XXI: el álbum familiar

Abstract

This doctoral thesis studies the intermedial relationships established between photography and Spanish autobiographical narrative in the 21st century. Specifically, it analyses how some authors use images taken from their own family albums, which becomes a privileged resource for the development of self-referential writing. Based on the concept of phototextuality, together with that of autobiography, the revision of the subject's individual or family past is then conceived from the interaction between word and image. After defining the phototext as a hybrid product of an intersemiotic, interartistic, and interdiscursive dynamic, and highlighting the implications of the ontological status of photography on a type of supposedly factual narration, the family album is considered as a visual repository of memory, whose literary potential has not gone unnoticed by writers and has awakened in recent decades a lively interest in analogue photography in the face of the dominance of the digital. In accordance with the typology of documents preserved in these particular archives, which range from the life of ancestors to the most recent circumstances of the author himself, the research focuses on examining a series of current Spanish works in terms of formal decisions regarding the material reproduction of the images inside them. On the other hand, the systematisation of the autobiographical phototexts follows thematic criteria that correspond to the different stimuli that move the individual towards the contemplation of the family album. Thus, by means of a multidisciplinary approach, both the aesthetic effect of these iconotextual manifestations and the emotional impact provoked by the vision of the photographs on the writer himself and on the reader-turned-spectator are assessed.

Esta tesis doctoral estudia las relaciones intermediales que se establecen entre la fotografía y la narrativa autobiográfica española del siglo XXI. En concreto, analiza cómo algunos autores emplean imágenes extraídas de su propio álbum familiar, lo cual se convierte en un recurso privilegiado para el desarrollo de la escritura autorreferencial. A partir del concepto de fototextualidad, en concomitancia con el de autobiografismo, la revisión del pasado individual o familiar del sujeto se concibe entonces desde la interacción entre palabra e imagen. Tras definir el fototexto como producto híbrido de una dinámica intersemiótica, interartística e interdiscursiva, y destacar las implicaciones del estatuto ontológico de la fotografía sobre un tipo de narración supuestamente factual, se considera el álbum de familia en calidad de repositorio visual de la memoria, cuyo potencial literario no ha pasado desapercibido a los escritores y ha despertado en las últimas décadas un vivo interés por la fotografía analógica frente al dominio de lo digital. De acuerdo con la tipología de documentos conservados en estos archivos particulares, que abarcan desde la vida de los antepasados hasta las circunstancias más recientes del propio autor, la investigación se centra en examinar una serie de obras españolas actuales en función de decisiones de tipo formal con respecto a la reproducción material de las imágenes en su interior. Por otra parte, la sistematización de los fototextos autobiográficos se ajusta a criterios temáticos que se corresponden con los diferentes estímulos que mueven al individuo hacia la contemplación del álbum familiar. Así, mediante un enfoque multidisciplinario, se valora tanto el efecto estético de estas manifestaciones iconotextuales como el impacto emocional provocado por la visión de las fotografías en el mismo escritor y en el lector convertido en espectador.
