En el presente estudio trataremos de acercarnos a algunas de las concepciones míticas
medievales que vertebraron la historiografía liberal del siglo XIX, principalmente de la
mano de uno de sus autores más influyentes en la construcción del relato nacional oficial,
Modesto Lafuente y su Historia General. Los mitos de Pelayo y Covadonga -origen de
la patria nacional católica-; Jueces de Castilla y Fernán González -referentes de la
independencia y supremacía castellana frente a León-; y el Cid Campeador -referente de
la Reconquista frente al islam-, constituyen los fundamentos identitarios de la patria que
se estaba creando. El análisis de las fuentes medievales que dieron origen a los mitos y el
estudio de los contextos y la realidad histórica en los que se escribieron nos permitirá
contrastar la diferencia entre la Historia como disciplina científica y la Historia como
instrumento al servicio de intereses particulares, en este caso de signo nacionalista.
In this study we will try to approach some of the medieval mythical conceptions present
in the liberal historiography of the nineteenth century, mainly by one of its most
influential authors in the construction of the official national narrative, Modesto Lafuente
and his Historia General. The myths of Pelayo and Covadonga -origin of the Catholic
national homeland-; Judges of Castile and Fernán González -referents of Castilian
independence and supremacy against León-; and El Cid Campeador -a reference point for
the Reconquest against Islam- constitute the identity foundations of the homeland that
was being created. The analysis of the medieval sources that gave rise to the myths and
the study of the contexts and historical reality in which they were written will allow us to
contrast the difference between History as a scientific discipline and History as an
instrument at the service of particular interests, in this case of a nationalist nature.
