Entre humanos y monstruos. El miedo, sus desfiguraciones e imaginarios en el «Diario de a bordo» de Colón

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza los diversos procesos metafóricos de distorsión y deshumanización que inventan la identidad de los indígenas antillanos en el Diario de a bordo de Colón. Con el objetivo de entender cómo se involucra el miedo en los primeros contactos entre españoles e indígenas antillanos, analizaré las representaciones fabulosas y monstruosas que diferenciarán a los caribes de los arahuacos. Para ello, es necesario estudiar los modelos literarios medievales, que trasladan supersticiones, mitos y visiones mágicas al proceso de invención y colonización de las Antillas. Por otra parte, revisaré la construcción de la identidad del caribe caníbal como emblema de la combinación entre miedo y fabulación dentro del terreno de la barbarie al que pertenece el nuevo sujeto colonial.

This paper analyzes the various processes of distortion and dehumanization that invent the identity of the indigenous West Indians in Diario de a bordo by Columbus. In order to understand how fear is involved in the first contacts between Spaniards and West Indian Indians, I will analyze the fabulous and monstrous representations that will differentiate the Caribs from the Arawaks. For this, it is necessary to study the medieval literary models and imaginaries, which transfer superstitions, myths, and magical visions to the process of invention and colonization of the Antilles. On the other hand, I will review the construction of the identity of the Caribbean cannibal as an emblem of the combination of fear and fabulation within the terrain of barbarism to which the new colonial subject belongs.
