Colloquialisms in Dubbing: An Analysis of the Translation of Colloquial Language in the Animated Series Adventure Time

Abstract

The process of translating a cartoon can be complicated, particularly when the colloquial tone is very marked. Rather than analyzing the speech of one of the characters, the purpose of this essay is to expose the techniques, rules and theories to follow in order to achieve a successful translation, gathering the methods used in similar essays. I have analyzed part of the script of the TV series Adventure Time, focusing on Jake the Dog’s lines in the first two seasons of the show, in order to find how colloquialisms were treated during the process of translation, the method and techniques employed, and whether the original text had gone through a process of decolloquialization, equivalence or colloquialization. The analysis conducted showed that, although the text was decolloquialized in terms of quantity, it was faithful to the original in terms of quality. This concludes that the translation, as a whole, was successful.

El proceso de traducir una serie animada puede ser complicado, en particular cuando el tono coloquial es muy marcado. En lugar de analizar el habla de uno de los personajes, la finalidad de este trabajo es establecer las técnicas, reglas y teorías a seguir para obtener una traducción exitosa, reuniendo los métodos utilizados en trabajos similares. He analizado parte del guion de la serie de televisión Hora de aventuras, centrándome en el texto de Jake el Perro en la dos primeras temporadas de la serie, con el objetivo de descubrir cómo se trataron los coloquialismos durante el proceso de traducción, el método y técnicas utilizadas, y si el texto original atravesó un proceso de decoloquialización, equivalencia o coloquialización. El análisis realizado mostró que, aunque el texto fue decoloquializado en términos de cantidad, fue fiel al original en términos de calidad. Esto concluye que la traducción, en conjunto, fue exitosa.
